Craig and Tony are at YOW! Conference in Brisbane and wander around the hallways talking to different speakers, hosts and attendees:
- Highlights included Kent Beck keynote “3x Explore, Expand, Extract“, Anita Sengupta keynote “The Future of High Speed Transportation“, Brendan Gregg keynote “Cloud Performance Root Cause Analysis at Netflix” and Jessica Kerr (keynote “The Origins of Opera and the Future of Programming” and talk “Shaving the Golden Yak“)
- Mark Hibberd and Andrew Newman – Mark’s YOW! talk “Failure and Change – Principles of Reliable Systems” and enjoyed Kents keynote and the 3X framework which is easy to understand and important for hiring whilst Andrew has noticed how many fewer ORM and Java talks we have at YOW! now and enjoyed and was convinced by Anita’s keynote
- Randy Shoup – his YOW! talks(“Attitude Determines Altitude – Engineering Yourself” and “Breaking Codes, Designing Jets, and Building Teams“, the importance of confidence, learning how to learn and imposter syndrome
- Brendan Cleary and Pete Manion from Tabcorp – got value from Jessica Kerr’s keynote and talk, Brendan’s Gregg’s keynote and the aspirational bar that has been set
- Dave Thomas – celebrating 10 years of YOW!
- Michele Playfair – 2 step journey in Agile (those playing catchup and those that are faster moving looking into newer things like sociocracy and holocracy), enjoyed Jessica’s keynote and Avdi Grimm’s “#nocode” talk suggesting that you are still a developer if you are gluing things together
- Dean Wampler – YOW! talk “Streaming Data with Kafka and Microservices” which is about how to use fast data to process things in real time, enjoyed Kevlin Henney’s talk “1968“, Dave Cheney’s talk “Lessons Learned Building Kubernetes Controllers” and Mikael Vidstedt’s talk “Java in a World of Containers“
